How to Tell If an Amazon Deal Is Actually a Good Deal

A Big Discount Doesn’t Always Mean a Great Deal

Seeing “40% off” or “Limited Time Deal” can make a product look like an obvious bargain. But the percentage shown on a product page doesn’t always tell the whole story.

A good deal is really about what you’re getting for the price, not just how large the discount percentage appears.

Before buying, it’s worth spending a minute looking at the current price, typical selling price, coupons, comparable products, and whether you actually need the item.

Here are some of the things we look at when evaluating deals for AR Deals.

1. Look Beyond the Percentage Discount

A 50% discount sounds better than a 20% discount, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the better deal.

For example, imagine a product showing:

List Price: $99.99
Current Price: $49.99
Discount: 50%

That looks impressive.

But if the product normally sells for around $55, the actual savings compared with its usual selling price aren’t nearly as dramatic.

Use the discount percentage as a starting point—not the only reason to buy.

2. Compare the Current Price With the Usual Price

One of the best ways to evaluate a sale is to understand what the product normally costs.

Prices on Amazon and other online retailers can change frequently. A product might be $79 one week, $69 the next, and then appear as a $59 limited-time deal.

When possible, compare the current price with prices you’ve seen previously rather than relying entirely on the displayed list price.

This is particularly useful for products that frequently go on sale, such as electronics, small appliances, tools, headphones, computer accessories, and smart-home devices.

3. Check for Coupons

Sometimes the advertised price isn’t the lowest price available.

Amazon products may have an additional coupon displayed on the product page. Depending on the promotion, you may need to select a coupon before adding the product to your cart.

For example:

Sale Price: $39.99
Additional Coupon: $10 off
Effective Price: $29.99

That’s a very different deal.

Always look around the price area for available coupons or promotional offers before checking out.

4. Check the Final Price Before Buying

Online deals can change quickly.

A promotion we find today might expire tonight—or even within a few hours. Inventory can also sell out, coupons can disappear, and sellers can change their prices.

Before completing a purchase, verify the:

  • Current price
  • Coupon or promotional discount
  • Shipping cost
  • Seller
  • Product version or model
  • Estimated delivery date

The retailer’s checkout price is ultimately the price that matters.

5. Make Sure You’re Comparing the Same Product

This is especially important with electronics and technology.

Products with nearly identical names can have very different specifications.

A laptop might have 8 GB or 16 GB of memory. A television could be a previous-generation model. Storage devices can have different capacities. Tools may be sold either with or without batteries.

Before deciding that one retailer has a dramatically better price, make sure you’re comparing the same model, size, capacity, generation, and included accessories.

6. Consider Whether the Product Is Actually Useful to You

Here’s the easiest deal-shopping rule to forget:

Something isn’t a bargain just because it’s cheap.

Saving $40 on something you were already planning to buy can be a great deal.

Spending $40 on something you’ll never use isn’t really saving money.

Limited-time promotions are designed to encourage quick decisions. Taking another minute to decide whether you actually need the product can save more money than chasing the biggest discount percentage.

7. Don’t Assume You Have to Buy Immediately

Some genuinely excellent deals don’t last long. But many products go on sale repeatedly.

If you miss a deal, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve lost your only opportunity to buy the product at a discount.

This is one reason the same product may appear on AR Deals more than once. A promotion can end and then return days, weeks, or months later at a different price.

If you don’t need something immediately, waiting for another promotion can sometimes be the better choice.

8. Compare Similar Products

A heavily discounted product isn’t automatically the best value in its category.

Before buying a $90 product marked down from $150, check whether a comparable product normally sells for $80.

Consider features, specifications, warranty, included accessories, customer feedback, and price—not simply the size of the advertised discount.

9. Watch for Seasonal Sales

Certain types of products tend to receive heavier promotions during major shopping periods.

Events such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, holiday sales, back-to-school promotions, and retailer-specific sales can create opportunities for larger discounts.

That doesn’t mean every product is cheapest during a major sale. But if you’re planning a non-urgent purchase, knowing when a category commonly goes on sale can help you decide whether to buy now or wait.

10. Decide What a Good Deal Means for You

There isn’t one discount percentage that automatically makes every product a good deal.

For an expensive item, even a 15% discount could represent substantial savings. For inexpensive accessories, you may want a much larger discount before buying.

A useful way to evaluate an offer is to ask:

Would I still want this product if the discount percentage wasn’t displayed?

If the answer is yes and the current price compares favorably with its normal selling price and competing products, you’ve probably found a much more meaningful deal.
